After Titanic it would have been completely foolish for me to go and try and top that. I`m an English girl, I`ve always loved England, I`ve never felt the desire to leave it for any particular reason. And whilst I`m ambitious and care very much about what I do, I`m not competitive. I also don`t want to act every day of my life. … So it was important to me after Titanic to just remind myself of why it was that I was acting in the first place, which is of course because I love it.

As it happened, she bumped into young DiCaprio recently, who was very keen to hear about the production of Quills. ‘He asked, ’ You didn’t love Joaquin more than me, did you? Don’t you ever love an actor more than you love me.’ I said, ‘How do you know I even liked you?’ He replied, ‘F*** off. You loved me!’ ’ Kate Winslet loves a lot of things: blackberries, Harvey Keitels remedial joke-telling and pretzels all leap to mind. And yes, Leo DiCaprio, she loves you, too.

When Winslet had an attack of vertigo on the back of the upended poop deck - spending a week in harnesses suspended l00 feet in the air - DiCaprio calmed her down. “I just told her we were safe,” he says. “She believed me.” One night, very late, Winslet and DiCaprio were lying on the deck during a break. An assistant approached for food orders. “Leo was so tired,” Winslet recalls; he had his head on Winslet’s stomach and asked for a sandwich. “The assistant asked, `What do you want on it?’ and Leo said, `Oh, Kate will tell you.’ And Leo just kind of fell asleep. And I did know exactly what he wanted - this kind of cheese and no tomato and no pickle. I absolutely knew. And I thought, `God, that’s really weird that I know this person so well.’ It was brilliant.
